Equipment

  • Shallow bowl
  • Non-stick skillet
  • Spatula

Ingredients

  • 8 slices of stale bread such as sourdough, brioche, or challah
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Butter or oil for frying

Instructions

  • Whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt in a shallow bowl until well combined.
  • Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat and add a tablespoon of butter or oil.
  • Quickly dip each slice of stale bread into the egg mixture, ensuring both sides are coated but not over-soaked.
  • Place the coated bread slices in the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side or until golden brown.
  • Repeat with the remaining slices, adding more butter or oil to the skillet as needed.
  • Serve hot with your choice of toppings.

Notes

  • Using stale bread helps prevent sogginess and ensures the French toast holds up well during cooking.
  • Avoid soaking the bread for too long to prevent it from becoming too soggy and challenging to cook.
  • Cooking over medium heat ensures even cooking without burning the exterior.
  • Delicious topping options include powdered sugar, maple syrup, fresh fruit, or whipped cream.
